Orthodontics
Orthodontics is a field of dentistry focused on diagnosing and treating tooth and jaw misalignment issues. This is primarily done through the use of braces and retainers, which are used to straighten moderately to severely crooked teeth.
If your misalignment issues are not severe, you may be able to accomplish your teeth-straightening goals with Invisalign removable clear aligners, one of the more popular cosmetic dentistry services we offer here at Town Square Dental.
However, should you require the services of an orthodontist, we have partnered with board-certified orthodontist Richard D. Hulme, DDS, MS to provide these services.
Signs You May Need Dental Braces
Misalignment issues affecting your teeth and jaw are usually obvious. Signs that you could benefit from dental braces or other orthodontic treatments include:
- Biting your tongue frequently
- Crooked teeth
- Difficulty brushing or flossing between misaligned teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Overbite (when the upper front teeth are positioned in front of the lower teeth when the mouth is at rest)
- Overcrowded teeth
- Small upper jaw
- Underbite (when the upper front teeth are positioned behind the lower teeth when the mouth is at rest)
- Upper and lower jaw do not align
Crooked teeth don’t just harm your appearance; it can increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. This is because bacteria are more likely to gather and grow when misaligned teeth fail to fit tightly against the gums.
Braces & Retainers: What to Expect
Braces are used to straighten teeth by applying a gentle force that help your teeth shift position over time. Brackets are bonded to the teeth and wire connects all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Braces are traditionally made of metal but at Town Square Dental, we also offer our patients the option of clear, ceramic dental braces for a more discreet look.
Here’s a general idea of what to expect when you’re getting braces:
- Before Braces. Your orthodontist will examine your mouth and teeth, along with X-rays that reveal the position of your teeth and jaw, including any teeth that may still be developing under the gums. A model of the inside of your mouth will be created to help plan your treatment. Occasionally, in the case of overcrowding, some teeth may need to be extracted prior to getting braces to allow adequate space in the jaw for all your teeth.
- Placement & Follow-Up. Braces are placed on your teeth and in follow-up appointments, adjustments are made to periodically tighten the wire, which helps to gradually reposition your teeth. The length of time you will need to wear braces will depend on your unique situation although, generally speaking, it can be anywhere from 1 to 3 years.
- After Braces. Braces are typically followed by the use of removable orthodontic appliances, such as custom-fit plastic retainers. These appliances prevent your teeth from shifting and protect the results you’ve achieved through braces. In some cases, you may require orthodontic headgear or other types of appliances to help correct teeth or jaw alignment issues.
Benefits of Braces
The No. 1 reason most people get braces is to improve the look and function of your teeth and mouth. With braces, you are creating a stronger, more balanced bite, which will affect the way you chew food and improve your overall health. Aligning your teeth and jaw can even improve the way you speak.
Another satisfying benefit of teeth straightening is that it can increase your self-confidence. Many of our orthodontic patients are no longer embarrassed about the appearance of their teeth after braces. You may even find yourself smiling more.
